All these bangers have gone and simbly put us in trouble. I blinked. Bangers? All those foreign bangers, you know, he said. Recession, sub-prime, liquidity crunch. All bloody bakwaas. Making a fool of us. I remained silent. I hoped he wouldn't ask me about my work!

Jack Patel Dubai Dreams (Audible Audio Edition) P G Bhaskar Manish Dongardive Audible Studios Books Reviews
A fun ,fast, pacy read filled with intricate details and witty conversation all set against the world of investment banking in Dubai. The characters resonate with anyone who knows someone in finance. A real page turner! A perfect summer read. I highly recommend it!
No nicer, funnier or lazier way to surf the boom and bust of the markets. The honesty and sincerity of the protagonist comes through and you ride the ups and downs along with him. One is used to masala films. This is a masala book! Full of flavour and delicate nuances, blended to good taste. Definitely a must read!!
A great book - There's not just a smile, but also a giggle on every page!
The book is narrated by the protagonist, Jack Patel, who seems to be a funny, sarcastic, ambitious, entirely like-able chap which just makes the book such an easy read. There are so many light hearted moments throughout the book when you completely relate with certain characters and want to scream out "THATS SO LIKE ME!!" The author has accurately portrayed those awkward moments you can only have when you're alone (in one instance, Jack very seriously tries his hand at writing poetry for a woman (very .. um cheesy poetry) and quickly realizes how love-sick and silly the idea is and trashes the idea)! I wish I could cite more examples but don't want to ruin it for anybody.
The last few chapters are particularly extremely well written, where I felt like I needed to curl up into a ball on my couch and hold on to the book tight, as though that might somehow cheer on Jack Patel and the rest of the characters as the financial crisis unfolds. It was written simplistically, but really conveyed the enormity of the situation beautifully never losing the humorous tone found throughout the book - when a particular stock crashes, a client calls a few weeks after the stock order has been placed and yells "cancel cancel cancel.. I don't want to make any such order .. okay? cancel. good." and hangs up. You totally understand but can't help laughing at these reactions!
Must pick it up ... Im eagerly awaiting thoughts of other readers?
Our book group chose this as the author lives in Dubai and is attending the up-coming Literary Festival. We had hoped for an interesting read with a lot of local flavour and, according to the cover, plenty of humour. All ten of us were disappointed for varying reasons, suffice to say, my 3 star rating was the most generous of the group.
From past experience, financial advisors are a slippery crowd, we have yet to find one that actually makes more money for us than himself - even in the good times. I couldn't believe that I found myself reading about one such person, one that was so full of himself and his successes. I tried to feel sympathy for him as he hit the financial crisis with a crunch, but it was hard.
The book felt very autobiographical, although the author is a banker, not a financial advisor. There were a few good characterisations - particularly Jack's friend Kitch and his boss, Peggy, but there was also a cast of thousands, mostly with Indian names and scattered details about their backgrounds, who started to blurr into each other.
Dubai was mentioned in passing but there was none of the atmosphere of the place, it could have happened in any major city.
The general feeling was that aspects of this book, particularly the humour, might be better suited to an Indian audience.
Apparently there is to be a sequel, I rather think the author would prefer I didn't read it.....
